FAQs About Manual Jack Plates for 40-255 Horsepower Engines
What Are the Features of a Large Outboard Engine Jack Plate?
A jack plate lets you adjust the position of your outboard engine. Setback moves the motor farther behind the boat, while the height adjustment lets you position the prop in the water. Adding height adjustment also makes it possible to use a long-shaft motor on a short-shaft transom.
What Is the Best Size Jack Plate for a Motor With 40–225 Horsepower?
There are two main considerations: height and setback.
The closer the prop is to the surface of the water, the more it will slip. This can keep the prop from blowing out, so you can hook up and plane faster. Large props need more lift than small ones, so they work better with long plates.
Setback helps with bow lift. If your boat has little or no natural bow lift, you can compensate by using a mount with a longer setback.
